Entrance Exams: A Rat Race
Some students are away from their homes, some
without sleep and some without friends or
family. This is a common scenario of today’s
world. Now, the question is,why do students do
this? Is it because of the difficulty of the paper?
Well, to some extent, yes. But that is not the
main reason. The most important reason is that
lakhs of students appear in competitive exams
like JEE or NEET. 24 lakh students apply for the
exam but a mere 1 lakh get into a renowned
institution.
Students, right from the age of 14 or 15 are taught that the sole
reason for existence are these exams. The pressure of getting into
these prestigious institutions is very high. Few believe they must be
sent into coaching institutes from an early age just for the sake of
these exams. Others believe that school is a waste of time.
They tend to memorise shortcuts and tricks which
will be helpful in those 3 hours. Instead of being
interested in subjects, they just study for the sake
of marks.
We do have good teachers and good students. Not
that the system is completely poor, there are
people who do better and realise the importance
of education for the sake of enlightenment. What
we need is betterment. I do not wish to point
fingers at anyone but to encourage everyone who
is experiencing this system. The idea is not to play A n u g y a M a n d a l
the blame game but to make it better. Otherwise,
what is the point? X I A
