“There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s the world. Love of books is the best of all.” Jacqueline Kennedy said.
Reading not only kindles a child’s imagination but also adds to their better understanding of people in general. It makes them empathetic and compassionate towards others’ feelings. A well-read child questions himself about the pros and cons of a situation while making a decision. The importance of reading habit is linked to professional success, as it opens up the mind to new avenues of knowledge.
Indian School Sohar celebrated Joy of Reading among the young minds under the guidance of Principal, Ms. Sanchita Verma. The DEAR Time (DROP EVERYTHING AND READ) was observed in the Classes I-VIII on 15th and 16th May, 2025 in the school. During these days all the classes devoted their first period in pleasure reading. Students and teachers dropped their normal routine work and dedicated the time for reading. A child’s reading skills are important to their success as they improve their communication and language skills.
"Books are treasure chests—open one and find magic!" As part of The Joy of Reading, an activity titled “Book Snapshots: Decode the Read!” was conducted on 16th April to encourage students to discover the hidden treasures within books. The main objective of conducting this activity was to encourage reading habits among young students. The students had to identify the book name that was shown in the slide. Each picture represented a book and the students were given three minutes to write down their answers. This activity helped the students to dive deeper into the books that they had read and identify the name of the books. This decoding helped them understand the importance of every page and every illustration in the book.
The DEAR time and the activity encouraged students to set aside dedicated time for reading during the day. The Joy of Reading concluded with both teachers and students feeling a deeper connection with books and making a heartfelt promise to continue reading more and more.
