“The habit of reading a newspaper is the best way to develop knowledge and linguistic skills.”

 Indian School Sohar organized a Newspaper Reading Competition for Class VIII on 2nd February 2025 to instill the habit of reading newspapers in the students. 

Students participated enthusiastically showcasing their excellent skills of reading. This competition was held to signify the fact that reading is an integral part of a student's learning experience. This competition served as a very useful tool for improving and enhancing the students' reading skills and knowledge of current affairs.

The students were assessed on the basis of pronunciation, articulation, expression, emphasis, style and delivery. Around 70 students participated in the competition.  All the participants read different sections of newspapers with confidence.

The competition was judged by Ms. Nivya K. Surendran and Mr. Muneeswara Moorthy. 

The Principal, Ms. Sanchita Verma, highlighted the significance of developing a regular reading habit. She encouraged the organization of the competition to instill this practice among students. She also elaborated on the various ways newspapers can positively influence students' lives, including inspiring them to consider a career in journalism.

At the conclusion of the competition, the Principal awarded merit certificates to the winners. Both the Principal and the Assistant Vice-Principal congratulated and appreciated all the participants for their commendable performances.

The students who emerged as winners were:

First Position – Agnes Liza Emmanuel (VIII E)

Second Position – Abhinav  Jithish (VIII E)

Third Position – Pakhi Chaubey (VIII A) 

Third Position – Mangalprabhu Mandiramurthi (VIII C) 

The competition was coordinated by Ms. Arti Bokil and Ms. Wafa. The Newspaper Reading Competition proved to be fruitful. The competition has not only helped inculcate a new hobby but also gave newspaper reading an interesting outlook.
