On September 2, 2025, Indian School Sohar celebrated the vibrant festival of Onam with great enthusiasm and cultural splendor. The celebration, held in the Recreation Hall, brought together students from Nursery to Class XII, highlighting the rich traditions of Kerala and the spirit of unity that the festival embodies.
The program commenced with a soulful Prayer Song, creating an atmosphere of devotion and serenity. This was followed by the dignified Lighting of the Lamp ceremony, performed by the Principal, Ms. Sanchita Verma, along with the Vice Principal, Mr. Yashvir Singh, symbolizing the triumph of knowledge over ignorance and the ushering in of positivity and prosperity.
The audience was then treated to a magnificent sequence of cultural performances that showcased Kerala’s artistic heritage. Students presented graceful renditions of Kerala Nadanam, Mohiniyattam, and the majestic art form of Kathakali, bringing alive the elegance and vibrancy of traditional dance and theatre. The ancient martial art Kalaripayattu demonstrated discipline and strength, while lively folk dances and the spirited Pulikkali (tiger dance) captivated everyone. Scenes from the thrilling Vallamkali (boat race), the joyful Kaikottikkali, and the graceful Thiruvathira dance, which highlighted feminine grace and devotion, further enriched the celebration of Onam festivities.
Adding to the grandeur, students participated in a traditional attire show, beautifully representing Kerala’s cultural identity. A special tribute was paid to the legendary painter Raja Ravi Varma, honoring his contribution to Indian art and heritage. This was followed by an informative and engaging video presentation on Onam and Kerala, which took the audience on a nostalgic journey across the 14 districts of the state, portraying its landscapes, traditions, and cultural richness while deepening their understanding of the festival.
The celebrations continued with a melodious Onam Song, evoking the festive spirit. The highlight of the event was the entry of Maveli, the symbolic figure of Onam, who delivered a heartfelt message. The Principal, Ms. Sanchita Verma, then addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of cultural festivals in nurturing unity, respect for tradition, and collective joy. To conclude the celebration on a lively note, students presented a dazzling Fusion Dance that blended Kerala’s classical and folk traditions with contemporary styles, symbolizing the harmony of tradition and modernity.
The program concluded with the National Anthem, filling the atmosphere with pride and patriotism. The Onam celebration at Indian School Sohar was a resounding success, leaving the audience inspired and connected through the spirit of culture, tradition, and togetherness.
