JOY OF READING

02-05-2026

“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free”, as quoted by Frederick Douglass, echoes the truth that books are not merely words on paper, but are the doors to a sea of knowledge, a sky of opportunities and a galaxy of imagination. Books are the ultimate lifelong companions that broaden horizons and shape character.

Rooted in this timeless belief, Indian School Sohar, proudly hosted this year’s ‘Joy of Reading’ initiative for students of Classes I to VIII on 15th and 16th of April, 2026. The program was designed to transform reading from a classroom requirement into a vibrant, lived experience. From the youngest readers in Class 1 discovering the magic of phonics, to the burgeoning critics in Class VIII engaging with complex narratives, the initiative brought literature to life.

By fostering a deep-rooted love for the written word, children are not only taught how to read but also encouraged to soar. The activity, under the guidance of Principal Ms. Sanchita Verma, was executed with passion, spirit, and unwavering dedication by Ms. Arti Bokil, Ms. Anita, Ms. Wafa, and Ms. Athari. The initiative reinforced that reading is not merely an academic requirement but a gateway to imagination, creativity, and lifelong learning.

The execution of the activity was centered around focused and uninterrupted silent reading sessions in the first period, allowing students to explore books of their choice at their own pace. To add a lively and engaging dimension, three students welcomed their peers dressed as Enid Blyton, Harry Potter, and Sherlock Holmes. They briefly introduced their characters and shared what made them special, including ‘The Cat in the Hat’, instantly capturing attention and sparking curiosity among young readers. The creative interaction helped bridge the gap between stories and students, making literature feel vivid, relatable, and enjoyable.

The student response was nothing short of extraordinary. Across all grades, there was a palpable sense of curiosity and a newfound eagerness to delve into unfamiliar genres. Moving away from the structured, screen-based format of the previous year, this year’s "back-to-basics" philosophy proved that profound impact often stems from simplicity executed with excellence. By returning to the tactile joy of physical books and face-to-face sharing, the initiative didn’t just strengthen reading habits, it reinvigorated the library as the heart of the school, ensuring the seeds of literacy continue to flourish long after the programme concludes.

As the pages turned and imaginations soared, the trace of the initiative lingered, blossoming a love for books among the students and reminding them that every book has the power to shape a lifetime.
