Indian School Sohar organised a Faculty Development Programme on ‘Assessment and Evaluation’ on Saturday, 19th September 2026, under the aegis of the Board of Directors (BOD) of Indian Schools in Oman. The programme was conducted in two sessions for different groups of teachers, with faculty members participating enthusiastically in the professional learning activities.
The programme commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, symbolising knowledge and wisdom, followed by an address by the Principal, Ms. Sanchita Verma, who highlighted the importance of continuous professional development and effective assessment practices in strengthening the teaching-learning process.
The first session, attended by teachers of the Middle and Secondary sections, was led by Mr. Gurpreet Singh Randhawa, Head of the Department of Mathematics, Indian School Muscat. The Resource Person was formally introduced by the Vice Principal, Mr. Yashvir Singh. Through interactive discussions and practical insights, Mr. Gurpreet Singh Randhawa emphasised that assessment is an integral part of the teaching-learning process and extends beyond testing students or assigning marks. The session focused on understanding students’ learning, identifying learning gaps, providing constructive feedback, and using assessment outcomes to improve teaching strategies.
The second session, attended by teachers of the Foundational and Preparatory Stages, was led by Dr. Ritu Paliwal, Biotechnology Teacher at Indian School Bousher, Muscat. The Resource Person was formally introduced by Dr. Sheenam Samuel, Headmistress. The session focused on meaningful and effective assessment practices, including competency-based assessment, authentic and formative assessment techniques, rubrics and grading criteria, question paper setting, types of assessment, and recognising and reducing assessment bias. The session encouraged teachers to use assessment evidence purposefully to support student learning, provide meaningful feedback, and promote continuous growth.
The teachers actively participated in both sessions and were encouraged to reflect on their existing assessment practices and explore ways to make it more purposeful, learner-centred, fair, and supportive of student learning. The Resource Persons were felicitated by the Principal as a token of appreciation for their valuable contributions, guidance, and insightful sessions.
The Programme was an enriching professional learning experience that reinforced the importance of effective assessment and evaluation in understanding student learning, addressing individual learning needs, and enhancing the teaching-learning process.
