A CELEBRATION OF VIGOUR & VITALITY: ANNUAL SPORTS DAY, 2017 -2018

Indian School Sohar celebrated the 25th Annual Sports Day in the evening of 14th Dec, 2017 at the Sohar Sports Stadium with the objective to develop in the students a sporting spirit, to spur the vigorous sportsmen of ISS to go beyond their best, and to provide a venue to display their physical prowess. “Success is where preparation and opportunity meet”. That is what the events of the day proved. Not only that it celebrated victories, but imparted great qualities of discipline, sportsmanship and the competence to develop into professional sportspersons. Sheikh Dr. Rashid bin Mohammad Al Kiyumi, Director General of Maritime Affairs in the Ministry of Transport and Communications, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Other distinguished guests were Dr.Rajeev Chauhan, Principal, Indian School Muscat, Mr. Bijo Varghese, Principal, Indian School Rustaq and Mr. Kazi Abdur Rahman, Principal Bangladesh School Sohar. To grace the occasion, we also had Mr. Abraham George, President, School Management Committee, Mr. Haridas Jeevraj Java, Vice-President, SMC, Mr. Rajesh Mehta, Treasurer, SMC, and other SMC members, Mr. Dilip Asher, Mr. Ajay Damani and Dr. Mahesh Mistry whose presence was quite encouraging.

The day's proceedings began with Guard of Honour by students’ welcome team and an endearing and euphonious song by the choir welcoming the guests. After her welcome note, Ms. Sanchita Verma, the Principal, presented the Annual Sports Report highlighting the admirable achievements that Indian School Sohar. Sambhav Agnihotri and  Prisha Singh achieved gold medals in the CBSE Oman Cluster Athletic Meet. She stressed on the need of excelling in sports. The events of the day filled with exciting victories and near misses began with the Costume Parade of the tiny tots reliving the colourful and intriguing world of the oceans and emojis. It was followed by the March Past led by the Council Members and House Captains. For the first time,a team of student’s alumni also joined the march past.  The beaming brilliance of the blue, the gleaming grandeur of the green, the radiating resilience of the red and the emanating elegance of the yellow made it extremely impressive. Besides being spectacular with the synchronized swing of arms and thudding feet, it was inexplicably inspiring due to the sense of dignity and pride that the students brought to it. The Torch Relay was held aloft by the Sports Captains and the Winners of CBSE Oman Cluster Athletic Meet, 2017. The Chief Guest declared the meet OPEN by releasing a white pigeon blissfully into the blue soon after the solemn oath administered by the Sports Captain, Aditya Vinod. The mascots of the 25th Annual Athletic Meet, 2017, The Tiger and the Oryx enhanced the magnificence of the event being national animals & also as bonds of friendship between Oman and India.

The spectacular Mass PT Display provided a good boost for the track and field events. The students of KG to Std. V created an enthralling atmosphere through the fun filled and exciting Lady Bug Race, Frog Race, Pram Race, Jellyfish Race, Ring Race, Zig Zag Race etc. The track events included sprints and relay races. The Satya Meva Jayate-Cultural Dance enchanted one and all. The Hula Hoop Drill & Rope Drill performed with precision, perfection and co-ordination was quite breath taking. Human Pyramid Formation by the boys was characterized by perfect synchronization, fantastic formations and energetic movement. The 100m races and the Mixed Relays evoked such fervor that everyone stood tip toe to witness the winner. All around were parents,  cheering at their little ones and after each race triumphant handshakes, hearty congratulations and sincere encouragement were offered. After the students’ events, the parents also participated enthusiastically in the event scheduled for them. In the Parent Game, Mr. Vinu Kumar and Sudha Vinu kumar secured first position, Mr. Vijay Shetty and Mrs. Jyoti Shetty Secured second and Mr.Anil Shah and Mrs.Hima Shah secured third.

The Sports Meet came to an end with the Prize Distribution. The winners of various inter-school sporting activities and of various races, Individual Champions and the winning Houses were awarded. The proudest moment of the ceremony was when the CBSE Oman Cluster Gold winners, Sambhav Agnihotri, Sakshi Shetty and Prisha Singh were awarded Gold coins. The Red House was adjudged the overall winner and the Green House emerged Runner Up.  The trophy for March past was lifted by the Blue House and Green House secured second position. Garvit, Anurag Gupta , and Sambhav Agnihotri were the individual Boys Champions and Shalini, Sakshi Shetty and Alina Siyad, Uttara Raju, and Sadhana Jayakumar were the individual Girls Champions in various categories.  A lively commentary throughout the programme by a team of students kept the audience thoroughly entertained.

It was a stunning event which witnessed overwhelming and zealous participation of students as well as parents. This exciting day was filled with lots of nostalgic memories of the event and highlighted the importance of the sports and a sporting spirit in today’s competitive world. The Silver Jubilee Annual Sports Day 2017 was full of fun, enthusiasm, vigour and perfect demonstration of discipline, tough competition and sportsman spirit.
