A LEAP TOWARDS THE SKY: ANNUAL SPORTS DAY, 2018

Indian School Sohar celebrated the 26th Annual Sports Day in the evening of 17th Dec, 2018 at the Sohar Sports Stadium with great zeal and excitement in a frolicsome atmosphere to spur the vigorous sportsmen of ISS to go beyond their best. Not only that it celebrated victories, but imparted great qualities of discipline, sportsmanship and the competence to develop into professional sportspersons. Mr. Khalifa bin Khamis Al Jabari, Director General, Directorate of Sports Affairs, Ministry of Sports Affairs, North Al Batinah Governorate graced the occasion as Chief Guest and Ms. Amina bint Abdul Karim bin Ibrahim Al Balochia, Member of the Board of Directors of Oman Sports School & Secretary of the School Sports Committee, North Al Batinah Governorate, was the Guest of Honour. To grace the occasion, we also had Mr. Abraham George, President, School Management Committee, Mr. Lalit Asher, Covener, SMC, Mr. Rajesh Mehta, Treasurer, SMC, and other SMC members, Mr. Dilip Asher, Mr. Ajay Damani and Dr. Mahesh Mistry whose presence was quite encouraging.

The day's proceedings began with an endearing Awakening Song by the choir welcoming the guests and laid the ground for other lovely performances. After her winning welcome note, Ms. Sanchita Verma, the Principal, presented the preamble of the school's Sports achievements through the Annual Sports Report highlighting the admirable victories that hyped Indian School Sohar. The events of the day filled with exciting victories and near misses began with the Costume Parade of the tiny tots of Kindergarten reliving the colorful crayons that make the world of the little kids quite exiting followed by the ever attractive heroes of children’s stories and cartoon characters presented by Std. I and II. The majestic March Past led by the Council Members and House Captains and the students of the brilliantly buoyant Blue House, the genuinely gleaming Green House, the remarkably resilient Red House and the exquisitely elegant Yellow House made it extremely impressive. Besides being spectacular with the synchronized swing of arms and thudding feet, it was inexplicably inspiring due to the sense of dignity and pride that the students brought to it. The Torch Relay was held aloft by the Winners of CBSE Oman Cluster Athletic Meet & Chess Tournament, 2018. The Chief Guest declared the meet OPEN and soon after the solemn oath was administered by the Sports Captain, Mohammed Omar Sherrief upholding the dignity of the games and expressing the determination to keep the sportsman spirit alive.  The mascots of the 26th Annual Athletic Meet, 2018, The Tiger and the Oryx enhanced the magnificence of the event being symbols of power and grace.

The spectacular Bamboo Drill provided a good boost for the track and field events. The students of KG to Std. V created an enthralling atmosphere through the fun filled and exciting Hop Scotch Race, Duck Race, Charlie Chaplin Race, Drag and Roll Race etc. The track events included sprints and relay races. The Motivational Dance enchanted one and all. The Satin Drill performed with precision and perfection was quite breath taking, and was characterized by perfect synchronization, fantastic formations and energetic movement. The 100m races and the Mixed Relays evoked such fervor that everyone stood tip toe to witness the winner. All around were parents, shouting and cheering at their little ones. The whole stadium reverberated with enthusiastic cheers from the spectators.  After the students’ events, the parents also participated enthusiastically in the event scheduled for them. In various categories of the Parent Game Vijay Shetty, Shaneeb, Bhavya Shetty and Jyothy Patel secured first position, Sudhir Nayar, Sudhanshu Jaswinder and Umadevi Sivaram Secured second and N.V. SnthoshSunil Takur, Renu Sharma and Kiran Kudale secured third.

The Sports Meet came to an end with the Prize Distribution. The winners of various inter-school sporting activities and of various races, Individual Champions and the winning Houses were awarded. The proudest moment of the ceremony was when the CBSE Oman Cluster Gold winners Sona Sudhakar, Juhita Sai Lakshmi, Jahanvi Patnaik G. Lakshitta and Sakshi Shetty were awarded Gold coins. Blue House was adjudged the overall winner and Yellow House was the Runner Up.  The trophy for March past was lifted by Yellow House and Red House secured second position Mahinthan Kishore, Risham Firoz, Joseph Mathew and Anurag Guptawere the individual Boys Champions and Shilpa Shetty, Elizabeth Mathew and Catherine Andrews were the individual Girls Champions in various categories.  A lively commentary throughout the programme by a team of students kept the audience thoroughly entertained.

It was a stunning event which witnessed overwhelming and zealous participation of students as well as parents. It was a delight to see the excitement with which children challenged themselves to attempt variety of races This exciting day was filled with lots of nostalgic memories of the event and highlighted the importance of the sports and a sporting spirit in today’s competitive world.
