According to Mahatma Gandhi, "Not mass production but production by masses is required". In the context the need of the hour is the production of energy by masses.
To commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi who epitomized the principle of non-violence, the Indian Institute of Training (IIT) Bombay, with the support of the Government of India and the Embassy of India, Muscat, organized the Gandhi Global Solar Yatra (GGSY) a global public movement. It aimed at promoting Energy Swaraj for mitigating climate change and sustainable development.
To seed the concept of GGYS, the Science Department of Indian School Sohar conducted a workshop on 2nd October, 2019 for students - to sensitize the future generations about the climate change and emphasizing the importance of using renewable energy and technology based solution like solar energy. Ms. Dhangowri Saraiya, teacher in-charge, Ms. Sheeja Jithish and Mr. Parandhaman M assembled and demonstrated the working of a solar study lamp to the students of ISS. A solar study lamp converts solar energy to chemical energy which in turn converts into electrical energy. The lamp is user friendly and easy to charge with the help of solar energy. Solar energy is abundantly available, eco-friendly and renewable source of energy that can be used in our day today life to meet the power crisis. It is a green and clean energy that can be utilized commercially to reduce the cost of electricity. The initiative and able guidance of Principal, Ms. Sanchita Verma made the program a grand success to educate the students of ISS.
It enlightened the young minds and created awareness on the severity of climate change and the viability of decentralized solar solutions to mitigate it. It also established the principle of Non-Violence towards environment.
