“The five S’s of sports are: stamina, speed, strength, skill, and spirit; but the greatest of these is spirit." With the same spirit and magnificence, Indian School Sohar conducted its 27th Annual Sports Day on 11th December, 2019 at the Sohar Sports Stadium upholding this aspect of sporting events. In this major event of the school, the four Houses were rewarded for their achievements acquired by individual and team efforts throughout the academic session.
Mr. Issa bin Saif Al Shamsi, Assistant Director, Educational Programmes, Activities and Students Welfare Department, Ministry of Education, North Al Batinah Governorate graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and Ms. Fatima Rashed Ahmed Al Fazari, Head of Women's Sports Department, General Directorate of Sports Affairs, North Al Batinah Governorate was the dignified Guest of Honour. A host of eminent dignitaries, Mr. Abraham George, President, School Managing Committee, Mr. Haridas Jivraj Java, Vice- President, SMC, Mr. Ajay Damani, Joint Treasurer, SMC and Dr. Mahesh Mistry, Senior Member, SMC, were also present on the auspicious occasion to boost the morale of the students.
The event commenced with the Guard of Honour, Welcome song, 'Rag Rag Mein Josh Ki Boonden' and a warm welcome note by the Principal Ms. Sanchita Verma. She then presented the Annual Report enumerating various achievements of the students. The track and field events began with the Costume Parade of the tiny tots who clad themselves with the theme 'Gifts of Nature'. The synchronized, rhythmic and majestic March Past, led by the Council Members and House Captains gave a pertinent beginning for the event. The energizing March Past set the tone for the rest of the events. The Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour received the salute of the students, during the impressive March Past coupled with some stirring marching music. The Torch Relay was held aloft by Zara Zabil of Class V, the gold medalist in the CBSE Oman Cluster Table Tennis Tournament and Sakshi Shetty of Class IX, the gold medalist in the CBSE Oman Cluster Athletics Meet.
The Chief Guest declared the meet OPEN soon after the solemn oath administered by the Sports Captain, Joseph Mathew upholding the dignity of the games and expressing the determination to keep the sportsman spirit alive. The mascots of the 27nd Annual Athletic Meet, 2019, Oryx, the National Animal of Oman and Shera- Tiger, the National Animal of India enhanced the stateliness of the event.
The races like Joker Race, Monkey Race, Ball Balancing Race, Princess Race, etc. held for the students of KG to Std. V created a mesmerizing atmosphere. The captivating aspects of the event were the splendid field drills like the Colour Drill, Aerobics, the Cultural Dance- Khelo India and Pompom Drill involving mass student participation. They sprayed on the field, a display of hues, vibrance and radiance. These events were characterized by perfect synchronization, fantastic formations and energetic movement. The 100m races and the Mixed Relays for Under 14, 17 and 19 Boys and Girls evoked such fervor that the air was filled with cheering and tons of encouragement for the young athletes. The Parent Game was the attraction of the day. It was elevating to see them participating with great enthusiasm.
The Sports Day came to an end with the Prize Distribution. The winners of various sports events, Individual Champions and the winning Houses were awarded with medals, shields and trophies. The gold medalists of the CBSE Oman Cluster Meet were awarded with Gold Coins as a token of appreciation. The Green House was adjudged the overall winner and the Red House emerged as Runner Up. The trophy for March past was lifted by the Red House and the Green House secured second position. Bhanu Sah, Muhammed Rabah and Aamir Zabil were the individual Boys Champions and Niharika Umesh, Sakshi Shetty and Catherine Andrews Ravi were the individual Girls Champions. A lively commentary throughout the programme by a team of students kept the audience thoroughly entertained. The evening came to a befitting close with the Vote of Thanks by the Sports Captain, Umaima Parveen. The elated and proud parents had a great sense of satisfaction that their wards are in the best hands and being well-groomed to be multi-talented.
