The first ever Online English Debate Competition of Indian School Sohar was conducted on Saturday, 17th October, 2020. Thirty- two students of classes IX - XII participated with great zeal and enthusiasm. The objective of the competition was to provide a platform for the participants to compete and test their debating prowess and allow the freedom of opinions.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by the Principal, Ms. Sanchita Verma, who greeted the virtual audience and participants. She also stated that the Debate was unique as the participants have received the motion three hours before the competition through Mentimeter. The motion chosen for the day was “Movies Are Just For Entertainment”. The teams were well prepared and undoubtedly convinced the audience of their beliefs and views with their righteous facial expressions and voice modulation. The debaters were fervent in their efforts and each one of them portrayed dedication and persistence.
The Debate speech was judged on the criteria of content, organization and clarity, persuasion and communication skills and the criteria for the Rebuttal were content and relevance. The participants armed with statistics and data made their arguments more emphatic with right body movements and gestures. The debaters displayed confidence in presenting their arguments before the audience and a panel of eminent Jury. All the participants showcased exemplary oratory and argumentative skills during the three minutes given to each participant for the Debate speech while the rebuttal round of one minute per participant included counter arguments.
The judges heartily congratulated the participants and complimented them for their commendable performance. Ms. Francisca Menezes was the compere of the event. Dr. Subhadra Prabhu, the School Counselor, was the moderator of the debate. It was well coordinated by Ms. Divya Johari, the Head of English Department, who proposed vote of thanks. She praised the all the participants for their unparalleled skills and further stressed the need of such activities to build confidence, determination and will power.
The results were declared by the Principal, Ms. Sanchita Verma. She appreciated and congratulated all the participants for their remarkable talent and efforts.
