“The highest education is that which does not merely give us information but makes our life in harmony with all existence.” Rabindranath Tagore

Indian School Sohar marked the 162nd birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore by conducting a special class assembly by the English Department on 9 May 2023 for the students of classes III – XII. Tagore was an author, poet, dramatist, philosopher, artist, and painter who contributed immensely to the nation. He was a polymath who made significant contributions to literature, music, art, and education. Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, making him the first non-European to receive this prestigious honor. Tagore's notable contribution to Indian heritage includes writing the national anthem of India, "Jana Gana Mana."

To commemorate his character and good deeds, his birthday is celebrated every year on 9th May. Rabindranath Tagore emphasized the importance of creativity, imagination, and critical thinking in education.

The aim of the assembly was to embrace creativity, imagination, critical thinking, and values in young minds. The celebration began with a prayer song followed by a thought. The students dressed as Rabindranath Tagore became cute replicas, instilling joy and happiness. A short video was presented to throw light on the life of Rabindranath Tagore. This was followed by showcasing the creativity of our young artists of classes VI to VIII, whose artwork was presented along with a beautiful rendition of the song ‘Ekla Chalo Re’ that is ‘Walk alone my friend’.  Finally, a quiz was conducted to inspire the students to know more about the life of this great beacon of love, hope, and care.

Overall, the objective of celebrating Rabindranath Tagore's birth anniversary was to honor his contributions, promote cultural awareness and appreciation, encourage creativity and artistic expression, enhance language and literature appreciation, foster a sense of identity and pride, and promote cross-cultural understanding. Through these objectives, we aim to provide students with a holistic educational experience that encompasses art, culture, and the celebration of human creativity.
