Indian School Sohar demonstrated its unwavering commitment to a sustainable future by actively participating in the Mission LiFE initiative. Launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, this initiative aligns with the ‘Lifestyle For Environment’ campaign, pioneered by the Embassy of India. The school orchestrated a series of activities aimed at instilling in students a conscious, healthy, and sustainable way of living that harmonizes tradition, development, and conservation.
Commencing on August 13, 2023, a dedicated week unfolded at Indian School Sohar, with the overarching theme of embracing seven essential principles. These principles encompassed Save Energy, Save Water, Say No to Single-Use Plastic, Reduce E-Waste, Adopt Sustainable Food, Reduce Waste, and Adopt Healthy Lifestyles. Throughout this week, students were introduced to the mascot of Mission LiFE, named Prakriti, and they crafted their own theme wheel, symbolizing their commitment to these principles and participated in various activities. The Interactive Wall served as a means to holistically connect students with the mission's objectives.
The school highlighted and rejuvenated its ongoing initiatives, "Bring Your Own Bottle" and "Bring Your Own Cup," aiming to minimize plastic waste. Both students and staff actively participated, setting a commendable example of sustainability. The school further reinforced its dedication to reusable materials, such as cloth bags for art supplies and stationery. The students were collectively administered the LiFE Pledge, solidifying their pledge to maintain environmentally friendly practices throughout their lives.
Promoting healthier dietary choices, students wholeheartedly engaged in consuming millet-based meals during their school lunches. Recipes were exchanged and prominently displayed on soft boards, providing an elevated culinary experience. This initiative was seamlessly aligned with the ongoing International Year of Millets program at the school.
The initiative’s essence underscored that the changes introduced were not confined to isolated activities; rather, they urged an overarching transformation in lifestyle. Students were encouraged to embrace eco-friendly alternatives like carpooling and cycling to school. Those who regularly cycled to school were acknowledged as ‘Pro Planet People’ by the school staff.
Students from our school participated in Mission LiFE Exhibition, organized by ISWK, which provided an interactive platform for students to delve into the various aspects of sustainable living. Through creative displays, informative exhibits, and engaging activities, students were encouraged to reflect on their lifestyle choices and their impact on the environment.
Principal Ms. Sanchita Verma applauded the students for their conscious decisions in favour of the environment.
The comprehensive program witnessed enthusiastic participation from students across all grades and staff members alike, culminating with a sense of unwavering dedication to the cause of sustainability.
Indian School Sohar's involvement in the Mission LiFE initiative exemplifies their commitment to fostering a sustainable future. By engaging students in a holistic manner and promoting eco-conscious practices, the school takes a significant stride towards creating a generation that embraces environmentally friendly choices as a way of life.
